====== Mobile Internet Access ====== The GWDG wireless network is available for all employees or students of Göttingen University and the Max Planck Institutes. There are several ways to use the GÖNET. ==== Eduroam ==== Eduroam is a global Internet service for education and research institutes and their staff and students. Using Eduroam and the Göttingen University account, an Internet connection can be established at many universities around the world. On the other hand, members of other participating universities can connect to the Wi-Fi of Göttingen University. Even within Göttingen, it is an alternative to a traditional VPN connection: Since it implements an encrypted wireless connection, it is safer than using the GoeMobile web portal and more comfortable than the additional encryption via VPN. [[https://www.eduroam.org|More about Eduroam|]] There are two possibilities for setting up a connection to Eduroam - either from within the network (i.e. with a connection), or from outside of the Eduroam network. In both cases, **the certificate "Deutsche Telekom Root CA" must be installed first**; it can be downloaded [[http://ca.gwdg.de/request/default_en.aspx|here]]. Double click on the file to open the "Add Certificates" dialog. Then click the "Add" button in the bottom right corner. ==== Establishment of Eduroam from within the Network ==== If the network "Eduroam" is among the available networks displayed under the WLAN icon in the menu bar, it can be selected directly. A new window opens where you have to enter your authentication data (username including suffix) and confirm with "OK". Please enter your email address as the user name in the following way: @stud.uni-goettingen.de //for students//\\ @gwdg.de //for GWDG employees//\\ @uni-goettingen.de //for university employees//\\ @mpibpc.mpg.de //for employees of the Max-Planck institute for Biophysical Chemistry//\\ @em.mpg.de //for employees of the Max-Planck institute for experimental Medicine//\\ @zv.uni-goettingen.de //for employees of the University central administration//\\ @zvw.uni-goettingen.de //for employees of the University central administration//\\ @med.uni-goettingen.de //for employees of the faculty of Medicine//\\ @mmg.mpg.de //for employees of the Max-Planck institute of Religious and Ethnic Diversity//\\ @mpimf-heidelberg.mpg.de //for employees of the Max-Planck institute of Medical Research//\\ After sending your data, a window opens, asking you to accept a certificate. Click the button in the bottom left corner to see the certificate's details, then check "always trust radius1-edu.gwdg.de" top left or click on the arrow "Trust" and mark "When using this certificate": "Always Trust". In both cases, confirm your settings with the "Continue" button. ==== Establishment of Eduroam outside the network ==== First, you must open the Network settings in the System Preferences and disable Airport. Open System Preferences -> Network On the left select "Airport" -> "disable Airport". Then add a new network: Click on "More Options" ? click on "Airport" top left ? click on plus (+), to add a new network. Fill in your details in the new window as follows: Network name: Eduroam Security: WPA2 Your full user name and associated password 802.1X: automatically Click "Add" to accept. As soon as a connection to Eduroam is possible, you will be asked for your password. Aditionally, the certificate "radius1-edu.gwdg.de" must be accepted as well (see above). ==== GoeMobile ==== GoeMobile is transmitted without encryption. A connection to GoeMobile is possible via the web interface or a VPN client (encrypted). ==== GoeMobile via VPN ===== To establish an encrypted VPN connection, you must be connect to GoeMobile first. Enable Airport and choose the network "GoeMobile" from the Airport icon in the menu bar. Here, a VPN connection using a VPN client is established. For detailed instructions see [[vpn]]. ==== GoeMobile via Web Interface ==== As an alternative to login via VPN, it is also possible to simply log in with a web browser. You only have to be connected to "GoeMobile". An important limitation, however, is that with an authentication via Web browser, the connection is not encrypted. Thus with the transfer of sensitive data (online banking, mail, etc.) you must be careful to use only encrypted protocols (ie https, POP3/IMAP over TSL / SSL, etc.). After connecting to the network "GoeMobile" in the Airport menu, start a Web browser (such as Firefox or Safari) and navigate to any page. You should be redirected to the login form of GoeMobile automatically, where you can give your GWDG or student account data. Additionally, you have to check the box to confirm that you have read and accepted the User policy. ==== Typical Problems ==== **AirPort cannot find the GoeMobile or Eduroam network.** On the page [[http://www.gwdg.de/index.php?id=777#c1630|goemobile.de]] you can find information on the locations of the access points.
