Information: Migration of VMs from Intel clusters

This page is only a documentation of the migration of VMs from Intel clusters to AMD cluster and is not relevant for the regular VM operation.

Following clusters are affected:

• Silber-2
• SilberAlt
• SilberHP
• SilberIntel

If VMs are located in the above clusters, identifying them is quite simple:

1. open the vCenter
2. select the “Hosts and Clusters” view (the first icon above the inventory list)
3. expand the object “vcenter2.vm.gwdg.de” and below it the object “GWDG
4. collapse all clusters not mentioned above and open the clusters mentioned above (if visible)
5. all VMs you see now are affected by the migration with downtime

If none of the above mentioned clusters are visible, make sure that the view “Hosts and Clusters” is really selected, if you see one or more clusters but none of the above mentioned is there, all your VMs are already on a cluster with AMD hosts or in another cluster and are not affected or will be affected in another phase.

Alternatively, you can check each VM individually.

1. open the vCenter
2. select the VM you want to check
3. select the “Overview” tab in the VM view
4. look for the tile “Related Objects”
5. expand the tile using the arrow to the right of the title if necessary
6. check if the VM is located in an affected cluster

A general objection is not possible, the existing Intel hosts are mostly decommissioned soon.

If for urgent reasons a migration of certain VMs is not possible on the date specified in the email or if certain VMs are critical systems, please contact as soon as possible and **only* via mail to vmware@gwdg.de.

• Bitte erstellen sie je Ausweichtermin eine .txt Datei.
• Geben sie im Dateinamen das gewünschte Datum der Migration im Format yymmdd.txt (für den 15.12.2022 z. B.: 221215.txt) an.
• Listen sie die vollen VM Namen bitte genau wie im vCenter Inventar auf.
• Nutzen sie dabei für jede VM bitte eine eigene Zeile.
• Sollten VMs, die nicht am regulären Termin migriert werden sollen Standortgebunden sein, weisen sie uns bitte in der E-Mail darauf hin.

Ausgenommen sind VMs, die min. eine der folgenden Anforderungen aufweisen:

• Software auf der VM benötigt Zugriff auf SSE und/oder AVX Instruktionen.
  • Falls diese Instruktionen genutzt werden müssen, ist dies den VM-Admins in den meisten Fällen bekannt.
• Software auf der VM benötigt zwangsweise eine Intel CPU
• VMs, welche CARP nutzen.
  • Das ist in allen Fällen den VM-Admins bekannt.
