GWDG is managing Internet domains for the Max Planck Society and the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, especially the domains
- gwdg.de,
- mpg.de and
- uni-goettingen.de.
Usage of own Internet Domains
Institutions are frequently asking special Internet domains for the institution or their projects. GWDG is able to provide subdomains of those domains administrated by GWDG, especially domains like
- mydomain.gwdg.de,
- mydomain.mpg.de or
- mydomain.uni-goettingen.de,
but GWDG is bound to the restrictions specified by the Max Planck Society or the University of Göttingen for the usage of such subdomains.
Other Internet domains must be ordered by Internet Services Providers (ISPs). GWDG is cooperating with the DFN-Verein as ISP. The DFN-Verein is the ISP for most of the German research institutes and is providing the Internet connection to GWDG. For domain services DFN-Verein is offering a complete delegation of the domain, which then (preferably) is administrated by GWDG.

Ordering Internet domains is subject to charges (once for setup and yearly fees), which must be paid by the registrant (not GWDG). Informations about charges are provided by the ISPs.
Registrations of members of the Max Planck Society or the University of Göttingen must compy with the rules of the Max Planck Society or the University of Göttingen.
Rules for the Max Planck Society
The Administrative Headquarters of the Max Planck Society must approve the usage of subdomains of mpg.de before GWDG is allowed to provide such domains.

Rules for the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen
The University expects that all webpresences of it's members are using subdomains of uni-goettingen.de to demonstrate it's corporate identity. Exceptions from this rule - i.e. for cooperation projects with external partners - must be approved by the Public Relations Department of the University before GWDG is allowed to offer service for such domains.
Names of subdomains directly below uni-goettingen.de must consist of at least 5 letters. Names of subdomains or services should not be names of persons (i.e. leaders of projects or workgroups), but should describe projects or themes. Again exceptions must be approved by the Public Relations Department of the University.
