Security Keys like FIDO2 or Passkeys
What exactly is this?
FIDO2/Passkeys allow you to authenticate using specific devices like smartphones, computers, or hardware tokens. This utilizes biometric authentication directly on the device.
In addition to biometric authentication, a hardware security token (such as a Yubikey or a USB token from another manufacturer) can also be used as a security key.
Requirements:
Due to the functionality of this option, it can only be used on devices that have a biometric recognition feature (e.g., fingerprint sensor or facial recognition).
Setup:
Open your account portal as described here under the heading “How do I set up an additional factor?”
1. After pressing the button “Secure my account” under “Passkeys,” you can assign a label to the security key.
2. Use the device name of the respective device as the description for the factor.
3. Then, follow the steps displayed by the respective device.
4. Once you have completed the setup on your device, the security key will also be stored in your GWDG account.
5. The security key is set up and ready to use.
