TOTP Authenticator Apps

Many developers offer apps to generate a unique token that you can use for authentication. The most common TOTP apps are provided by Google and Microsoft.

To use this feature, a mobile phone with a common operating system and the installation of an authenticator app from the respective app store is required.

Open your account portal as described here under the heading “How do I set up an additional factor?”

1. Install the desired TOTP app on your smartphone.

2. After pressing the button “Secure my account” under “Authenticator App,” you can assign a label to the security key.

3. Provide a suitable description that will allow you to identify the security key later. GWDG recommends using the name of the authenticator app and the device on which the app is installed. For example, a description could be: “Microsoft Authenticator on Samsung S23.”

4. Open the TOTP app on your smartphone and scan the QR code displayed in the account portal.

5. Once the QR code is recognized, the current token will automatically be displayed in the TOTP app.

6. Click ““QR-CODE GESCANNT” (Qr code scanned) and, for verification, enter the 6-digit code displayed in the TOTP app on your smartphone into the browser window.

7. The security key is set up and ready to use.
